Logitech UE MiniBoom

My favorite portable speaker just got better

About a year ago I raved about the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox. It was by far the best bang for your buck when it came to portable speakers. Well, all that has changed with the arrival of another even better speaker from the Logitech/Ultimate Ears collaboration. First some history:

The Logitech Mini Boom is pretty much the same size as its predecessor, Weighing in at 300 grams with 4.5-by-2.5-by-2.5-inch dimensions, Logitech packed in two 1.5-inch, 4-ohm drivers and 3-by-1.5-inch passive radiator. The result is impressive sound and even better, two can be paired for even more impressive stereo.

Even before you hear a note out of these little beauties you can’t help but be impressed by the packaging…crystal clear plastic boxes showing off the bright colours of my yellow and red units. I started off with the yellow one to compare it with my year old red Mobile Boombox. There is a noticeable difference..a stronger warmer sound with a surprisingly rich low end and¬†a pleasantly thick and warm midrange matched by a clear and agile top end and no distortion even at full blast which is amazingly loud for such a little box.

Getting started couldn’t be simpler..pairing with my iPhone followed the standard procedure with no difficulties but pairing with my NFC equipped Google Nexus 5 was even simpler. I just brought the phone near the speaker, followed the prompts and in seconds I was playing music.

MiniBoom appNext comes the piece de resistance..pairing two speakers to spread the range say at a party with one speaker on each side of the room…or even more impressive set them up as left and right speakers for stereo playback. Place the two about 10 feet apart and prepare to be blown away by a pretty impressive stereo soundstage with a big sound. You accomplish the pairing by either pressing a sequence of the buttons on the speakers or better use the app. Available for iPhone and Android the Mini Boom app shows the colour of the currently paired speaker and shows you the battery level. You can turn the alert sounds on or off on the phone if you don’t want to be disturbed, and there is also a simple equalizer. The app also includes a full user manual for the Mini Boom.

Oh yes, I also forgot to mention that the Mini Boom includes a microphone and functions as a hands free speaker phone.

Overall this is an impressive little package that provides big sound on the go with 10 hours of play time on a charge..use it on the patio, at the beach or a party you will be impressed by how good it is. If you choose to buy a pair you get a powerful stereo system that will stand up to units at three times the price. The Logitech UE Mini Boom is by far the best portable speaker bang for your buck.

The Logitech UE Mini Boom is sold at Apple Stores, Best Buy and Future Shop and many Logitech resellers. You can also buy online at the web store for $120 in Canada and $100 in the US. You can choose red, black, yellow, orange or purple. If you are going to pair them I would suggest different colours so you can tell which is Left or right. One or a pair will make a great stocking stuffer.
