Only days after rumors began to swirl Apple announced availability of a 128GB version of the Fourth Generation iPad with Retina display. The new iPad will be available in WiFi and WiFi + Celular versions Next Tuesday February 5th.
Most experts suggested the new high storage capacity tablet would be released with Apple’s March tablet refresh…some suggested the rumor was just not true. In a surprise move Apple quietly sent out a release today to announce the new iPad which complements the existing 16GB, 32GB and 64GB tablets in the iPad 4 range. It also comes a day after Apple released the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 6.1, which includes support for the 128GB storage model, further support for more 4G LTE markets including MTS and SaskTel in Canada, as well as a number of security fixes.
Interestingly the 128GB iPad will be available four days before the Microsoft Surface Pro the Intel Core i5 and full Windows 8 Pro version of its Surface line and Apple’s release made no bones about targeting the same market.

I’m not likely to be a customer for this new iPad. Priced at $799 for the WiFi version and $929 for the WiFi + cellular version this device is, like the $200 steak lunch aimed at the corporate tab. The question is will even corporations be willing to pay Ultrabook prices for a tablet running iOS.
