The winter vacation season is upon us and most of us worry about protecting our possessions while we are away. Home alarm systems are great but the siren won’t scare away pros and by the time police arrive they are long gone. With the D-Link Cloud Camera 1200 you will at least have a picture of the thieves.
The Cloud Camera 1200 (DCS-942L) is a lightweight device in white inconspicuous enough to put anywhere in the home. You can use the stand or install it permanently on a wall (mounting screws included). From the front it looks pretty basic..a lens surrounded by a ring that houses four infra-red lights for night operation, an IR sensor and a microphone and above the ring is a passive IR motion detector. Around back you will find an ethernet port, power and speaker/headphone jack a power LED a WPS LED and a WPS button. On the side there is a slot for a Micro SD card.
Setup couldn’t be simpler. This is truly a plug and play device. Power the camera up then either plug in the ethernet cable or press the WPS button on the camera an your router and it sets itself up. D-Link calls it Zero Configuration.
Once your camera is set up you can monitor and control it from mydlink.com a web portal that allows access to your live camera feed from any Internet-connected computer or mobile device, anytime. All mydlink-enabled cameras can be viewed and managed on your personal mydlink portal so you can enjoy the freedom of remote monitoring on your terms. You can see the live view from the camera..including audio, playback from the camera’s Mico SD card or set the camer to do such things as email you and/or record if it detects movement, or set a schedule for recording. This should serve the needs of most but if you like to get into the nitty gritty the advanced settings button takes you to a web interface for the camera…D-Link router users will recognize the layout.
Away from home there are apps for iOS and Android devices that allow you to view the live camera feed and take a snapshot. You can also zoom the lens up to 4X (digital). The quality is very good…I tried it on 3G and the results were excellent. Using the Telus LTE network was as good as being on my home WiFi Network.
The D-Link Cloud Camera 1200 is a great little surveillance camera with terrific monitoring tools, its uses are only limited by your imagination. I especially liked the motion detector feature with email notification.
The uses for this simple home security camera are endless..a nanny cam to make sure the kids are doing their homework if you are not home, watch pets, keep an eye on the baby and of course watch for intruders. You always have two way audio so you could at least have the satisfaction of shouting at the thieves while you watch and photograph them as they rifle through your valuables.
The DIR-942L is available wherever D-Link products are sold for $149.99
