My MacBook Arrived

My brand new 12″ MacBook arrived today and I love it. I will have a full review next week but, here are my first impressions.

Out of the box I proceeded to set it up. I had read the scary articles about the Setup Assistant hanging for up to thirty minutes if you connect to the internet during setup but I decided to follow the normal setup and my new notebook was up and running in under 5 minutes. There were a number of updates to do..and once they were done I did some web surfing and set up my email accounts etc..I found the keyboard felt different but it didn’t slow down my typing and I was starting to get used to it after a few minutes. I wasn’t sure if I would like the Gold colour but once I picked it up and had a good look…Wow! Not to mention it is light as a feather.

The new MacBook is definitely faster than my Mid 2012 MacBook Air 11″ in fact for things like email and web surfing it feels as fast as my Mac mini with an i7 quad-core processor. Obviously the screaming fast PCIe-based flash storage makes a huge difference. And the Retina screen…spectacular is the word that comes to mind. I am currently undergoing treatment for Macular Degeneration and my eyesight isn’t the greatest but, I had no trouble reading text on the screen at the default resolution.

My Macbook arrived 20 days after I placed my order on the morning of launch day. For  7 days it was in the hands of UPS and of that 7 days it sat in depots at Anchorage, AK and Louisville, KY for more than 4 days. Previous orders from Apple shipped from China via FedEx have arrived in three or four days. I think Apple made a mistake switching to UPS.

Are you able to draw on the screen using your finger? Does the screen separate and become a tablet? Does it have a secure operating system? (Yes, Apple needs security software!) Did you get a $250 discount? $2000+ vs $1100…gee, which way would I go?

Apple and its marketing just is not worth the price of admission.

Oh but it has 2X the processing power and 3X the RAM than the $1200 iPhone 6+ and I could buy 3 of them for that money.

Apple has incredible marketing. People are being brainwashed. They are being told that Apple products are 100% secure. Absolute bullshit and any security expert knows it.

Are there bugs in iOS? Sure are! They fixed a bunch just last week with more to come. The ONLY benefit of iOS is that there is only iOS. But it means you have to pay Apple’s incredibly inflated prices. An iPhone 6+ costs less than US$300 to build. No wonder Apple is so flush with cash and you are paying it.

I had an iPhone 3G before I knew better. They stopped supporting it in 18 months of a 3 year contract but not before updating iOS to 4.2 when the phone was not capable of handling higher than 3.8. I ended up with a phone which crashed repeatedly for another 18 months. I was not pleased to say the least. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus I replaced it with is 100 times the phone and actually still works well after 4 years of service. I can even put Lollipop on it.

The Surface 3 Pro is so much better than the MacBook Air at just over 1/2 the price. Windows 8.1 works and Windows 10 will be awesome.

I’m not going to try and change someone who thinks Apple is the AntiChrist. However do tell me where you can buy a Surface Pro 3 for 500 bucks (half a MacBook Air) and I will buy a bunch to resell and make a tidy profit since a model equivalent to the 11″ MBA sells for $1480 with keyboard at Best Buy.

You are right sort of..with Windows 10 it might actually be useful since it is pretty much a brick with 8.1. BTW I wonder why the latest and best versions of Microsoft Office are only available for iOS and OS X. Does Microsoft know something we don’t?

I don’t have any issue with Windows 8.1 unlike with 8.0.. It is exactly the same as Windows 7 except for the Start Button but you get quickly used to it.

As far as the Surface 3 Pro being $500 that’s not happening but it can be had for just over $900 which is still $400+ cheaper than your MBA.. I see the commercials and have to agree that the Surface Pro is the way to go. The Surface 4 Pro is close to release so it explains the up to $250 discount on the 3.

I still love my OnePlus One. I sure wouldn’t own an iPhone and would sell the 6+ if I were given one.. Yes there are some bugs right now in Cyanogen OS 12 and a major bug in Google Play Services with location service which is killing everyone’s battery but Google has promised a repair.. It is not the fault of the phone. The Cyanogen is an interim release as is OxygenOS.. Both are being upgraded to Android 5.1 shortly.

I just wonder how you can be unbiased in your reviews when you are so head over heels in awe of Apple?
